Twelve years ago I met a GOP presidential candidate, an older, Senate stalwart with an attractive wife and a strong record of military and political service, who ran against a young Democratic incumbent.
The elder statesman lost the election.

They're completely different. Dole carried a fountain pen and McCain uses a Sharpie.
Didn't Bob Dole run against an incumbent Clinton 12 years ago? No one had heard of Clinton, unless you came from the state of Arkansas.
Fortunately the Pineapple Farm is doing quite well.
